Marlena is of Samoan, Fijian, & Japanese descent and is honored to have been chosen & raised in the Tongan community, thanks to her adoptive family. Marlena attended Notre Dame de Namur University, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Performance with a Minor in Business, then went on to attend Holy Names University, where she received her Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy. During this time, Marlena recognized the importance of mentorship for first-generation students and the unfortunate reality that there was and still is, a lack of Pacific Islander representation at the college/university level. Her work with SPIO aims to provide PI students with resources & support as they navigate the duality of their personal and professional worlds. Marlena currently works with Art in Action, a Bay Area non-profit that makes visual arts education accessible to students all over the US, while continuing to teach voice students of all ages. In her spare time, Marlena enjoys watching live sports & anime, styling hair, and most recently - playing golf and going on nature walks!
